Heroes all.

InterestingLiterature's avatarInteresting Literature

As tomorrow (8th March) is International Women’s Day, we’ve gathered together ten of our favourite quotations from women writers. We’d be interested to hear your favourite quotations from women writers, in the comments below – which names/quotations have we missed off?

Austen

‘Going to the opera, like getting drunk, is a sin that carries its own punishment with it.’ – Hannah More

‘If only we’d stop trying to be happy we’d have a pretty good time.’ – Edith Wharton

‘There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.’ – Sylvia Plath

‘One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other.’ – Jane…

I Shall Go Gentle

(Note: This is my meager answer, for today anyway, to Dylan Thomas’ iconic poem–jrs)

Do not fear this, my child.
I shall go gentle,
I shall not rage,
I shall escape this delightful cage.

It has served me well,
this truth of bone and meat,
this protoplasmic wad,
this dust from stars and sod.

I am but a man, my child,
who has tasted joy and pain
and felt his curious way along,
unraveling his living body song.

I once thought I’d know it all:
the mysteries of skin and breath,
the space between the lines,
the human heart and human mind.

Such fantasy now makes me laugh, my child.
I shall go gentle,
I shall not rage.
You will carry my wonder when I cease to age.

Haiku–The Light in Lightness

Piles taller than me;
it’s time to deal with The Stuff,
creating lightness.

Dredging up the past,
memories only to keep;
planning to move home.

Thirty years hide here,
scrabbling beneath profound dust.
Maybe we’re crazy.

A Thankful Dad

(Note: for Jess and Ben, just because–jrs)

Both of you born in the winter cold and dark,
which says a lot for early spring romancing.
The two of you different and several years apart,
but each of you set my heart to dancing.
